How to Play Breakout

Move your paddle left and right to bounce the ball upward into the bricks. Each brick you hit is destroyed and awards points. Your goal is to clear every brick on the screen to advance to the next level. Miss the ball and you lose a life — lose all your lives and the game ends.

On desktop, use left/right arrow keys or A/D to move the paddle. Press Space or Enter to launch the ball. On mobile, drag your finger across the screen to position the paddle. The controls are tight and responsive, giving you precise control over every bounce.

Power-ups

  Wide Paddle

  Expands your paddle to make catching the ball much easier. A lifesaver in tight situations.

  Multi-Ball

  Splits the ball into multiple balls, clearing bricks much faster but harder to track.

  Fire Ball

  The ball burns through bricks without bouncing, demolishing entire columns in one pass.
• 🎯
  Laser

  Equips your paddle with laser cannons. Shoot bricks directly while still bouncing the ball.

Trophies and Achievements

Breakout has 31 trophies that reward everything from clearing your first level to achieving perfect runs without losing a life. Bronze trophies cover the basics, silver trophies require sustained skill, gold trophies demand mastery of power-ups and advanced techniques, and the platinum trophy is reserved for players who conquer every challenge the game offers.

The Music DJ System

Unlike most browser games, Breakout comes with a built-in music system that lets you control the vibe. Toggle between tracks, mute music independently from sound effects, and find the perfect soundtrack for your brick-breaking sessions. Press M to toggle music on or off at any time.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Breakout has full keyboard support for menus and gameplay. Arrow keys move the paddle, Space launches the ball, Escape opens the pause menu, M toggles music, F toggles fullscreen, and number keys 1-5 select menu options. On touch devices, keyboard hint labels are hidden automatically.

Cloud Save and Leaderboard

Your progress, high scores, and trophies save automatically in your browser. Create a free GameVolt account to sync everything across devices and submit your scores to the global leaderboard.
